Power Supply

Rifa Capacitors

This power supply contains Rifa capacitors, which will eventually fail and release acrid smoke. It’s best to replace them before that happens, ideally with appropriate X/Y class capacitors that do not have the intrinsic limitations that old Rifa capacitors do.

Qty Description Dimensions Lead Spacing Replacement
2 0.22uF X2 (a) RIFA PME 271 M 40/085/56 CV2 250V~SH (OVE) 565-1 LD2 23.4 mm x 11.3 mm x 16.8 mm 20.3 mm (also hole for ~23 mm) KEMET R463N322050M1K
2 4700pF Y (b) RIFA PME 271 Y 40/085/56 CV1 250V~SH (OVE) 565-1 LD2 13 mm x 4.7 mm x 10.3 mm 10 mm, mounted bent-down on the side KEMET ‎PHE850EA4470MA03R17‎

Fuse

The fuse is soldered in.

Markings on the original fuse: “(UL) BEL 3AG 1A 250V (SA)”. Fuse is best described as “glass cartridge with termination caps and axial solder leads attached”. Bel fuse part number may be “3AG 1-R”, therefore a “fast blow” fuse. Part number “3AP 1-R” should be the axial leaded version. Replace with Littelfuse 0318001.HXP.

Maintenance Log

2020/Feb/07

Left system on for a while (ten minutes) and then heard the classic Rifa “frying bacon” hiss. Turned off the computer. The acrid Rifa smell did eventually come out a bit when I moved the system around, but was otherwise well-contained.

Opened up the power supply. Failed to remove the DC power wire bundle grommet with the tools on hand, but was able to work the PCB out of the case with a bit more persistence.

There was expelled soot on the circuit board, likely from the crack in the larger Rifa on the right side of this picture.

All the Rifa capacitors were cracked in the usual manner. There was no evidence of explosive smoking or self-disassembly.

Apple IIGS failed or failing Rifa capacitors

The Rifa capacitors were examined and replaced with modern substitutions.

The fuse was blown, which is a bit unusual for a Rifa capacitor failure. I replaced it with a modern substitution.
